Loyalty in William Shakespeare´s Romeo and Juliet - 532 Words

The Twisted Nature of Loyalty Loyalty : a bond composed of trust and faith. Can such a fragile bond truly function in a world filled with greed? William Shakespeare does not support the idea of ‘loyalty’ because humans have the ability to desire. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare manipulates several human relationships, so that he can define loyalty as a bond composed of ambition and beliefs. Loyalty itself means being faithful or in allegiance to either someone or something. Shakespeare displays the idea of loyalty through Romeo and Juliet. â€Å" Dost thou love me? I know thou wilt say ‘Ay’,/ And I will take thy word; yet, if thou swear’st,/ Thou mayst prove false;†(II.ii.95-97). After these lines, Romeo responds by swearing he loves Juliet. They pledge their loyalty to each other by arranging a marriage. However, this marriage only shows a false loyalty created from desire. Romeo loved Roseline for her beauty. When he saw Juliet, he i mmediately abandons Roseline without a moment’s hesitation. Just like before, Romeo will also immediately abandon Juliet when he meets someone more beautiful. Their relationship represents the fickle nature of loyalty. Shakespeare sees loyalty as the result of someone’s utmost desires. Romeo will only stay loyal to his true desires.
